Taiwan’s national team departed for Japan July 19 to participate in the Tokyo Summer Olympics, according to the Executive Yuan.
Prior to their departure, Premier Su Tseng-chang urged the athletes to bring their A game and make their country proud at the multisport event running July 23 to Aug. 8, adding that the people of Taiwan will be enthusiastically rooting for them from home.
Su made the remarks during an official send-off ceremony at Taipei Songshan Airport in the capital.
According to the premier, the government is dedicated to cultivating top-notch athletic talent, setting up the National Sports Training Center and other related facilities as well as offering customized training sessions. Members of this year’s team have all thoroughly proven their mettle and worthiness to represent Taiwan at the Olympics, Su added.
Other high-profile attendees at the ceremony were Minister without Portfolio Audrey Tang, Minister without Portfolio and Cabinet Spokesperson Lo Ping-cheng, Minister of Education Pan Wen-chung and Sports Administration Director-General Chang Shao-hsi.
According to the SA under the MOE, a total of 68 Taiwan athletes will compete in 18 different sports at this year’s games. These include archery, boxing, cycling, golf, judo, swimming, table tennis, tennis and taekwondo. (DL-E)
